Fernando Alonso’s simracing team FA Racing G2 announced the signings of five new talents to the newly formed team at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today in a move that has changed the landscape of simracing at the highest level. This has included the signing of the iRacing Blancpain GT Series Champions of Isaac Price and Frederik Rasmussen along with Sebastian Job away from CoRe SimRacing. The other two signings are Joni Tormala away from IneX Racing and Nestor Garcia Jr who recently left Iberica Racing Team. They will be joined by Fernando Perpinan, who won the FA Racing G2 Logitech G Challenge today.
FA Racing G2 formed in late 2017 signing up Cem Bolukbasi from CoRe SimRacing and Danny Engels as a team manager before two time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso was signed as the Team Principal. The goal of FA Racing G2 will be to race high up within championships on F1 2017/18, iRacing and Gran Turismo and to qualify for major series that may pop up such as World’s Fastest Gamer.
FA Racing G2 have been considered to be the catalyst for the corporate shift in simracing with teams such as KIYF, Campos Racing, McLaren and Renault all angling moves into the simracing market.
There has also been rumour that Fnatic have the potential to make a simracing push after acquiring ex-Mercedes F1 boss Nick Fry as their commercial and strategic adviser.
FA Racing G2 while invasive into the industry, understand what is needed out of an esports structure to maintain business decisions that are in favour of developing the industry. The signings they have made have been nothing short of sensational and they have selected carefully drivers who can be both fast and versatile when it comes to platform and when it comes to vehicle. Danny Engels is a fantastic person to know as a businessman and as a friend and I have no doubts that he will bring the best out of all the drivers at his disposal.
I think the selections of championship battlegrounds are impressive too with F1 2017/18 the best viewership platform in simracing, iRacing with the best talent and competitive fields in simracing and Gran Turismo who have one of the best commercial appeals in simracing.
I think FA Racing G2 have shown to be the model company coming into simracing and I think they have the potential to become a team that will be able to hold longevity into the future with their drivers for the next ten years.
The first opportunity to see FA Racing G2 in action will be this Saturday in the iRacing Blancpain GT Series at Mount Panorama, Bathurst where Price and Rasmussen will be looking to defend their crown starting off with the six hour event. You can watch the first round live and uninterrupted on iRacing’s Youtube at 1:45 PM GMT with coverage presented by Racespot TV.
